Emotional Intelligence

What on earth is emotional intelligence? Do our feelings go to school to gain an education? Emotional intelligence, or EQ, is a topic not many of us are familiar with, but it is incredibly important. It has been shown that a high EQ is more accurate at predicting success than a high IQ. So what is emotional intelligence?

Emotional Intelligence, also known as EQ or EI, was a term first widely used by the psychologist Daniel Goleman. It’s been ground-breaking work that has really represented a paradigm-shift in the way we think about what it takes to be successful in life. Emotional intelligence is the ability to recognize and manage your own emotions, as well as the ability to recognize, understand, and influence the emotions of others.

As you consider this definition, you can see how EQ impacts virtually every aspect of life and leadership. Those able to effectively manage their emotions while assessing the emotions of others will win the leadership game every day of the week. Simply put, people with high EQ are more successful because they understand themselves and others, and know how to use that understanding effectively.  People want to follow these individuals because they are inspiring, motivating, goal-driven, and accomplished.
